I looked at some of Disneys' old villains and was aware that if in silhouette you'd mainly be able to see points, spikes, or something with sharp edges on their person. While altering my virus to have some of these attributes I remembered something which had these qualities and was quite terrifying were the masks of a Plague Doctor worn in the times of when the 'Black Death' was epidemic.
The Black Death was one of the most devastating pandemics in human history, peaking in Europe between 1348 and 1350. It is widely thought to have been an outbreak of bubonic plague caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis.

these are nightmarish - lovely! :D
ReplyDeleteThe Beak of the mask would be used to hold some sort of dried flowers, oil sponges or burning incense as they thought that disease was carried through smell - this is the first form of a gas mask
ReplyDeleteThey were terrifying as Plague Doctors were the sign of death as the plague was incurable back then
Sorry about the history lesson but yeah, my theory is that the sharp edges, the points & spikes are now terrifying due to plague doctors being seen as a harbinger of death
